Essential Experts to Add to Your Business Support Network

Are you getting expert advice in your business?  You don’t have to do everything for your business yourself.

Many of my clients don’t like dealing with numbers - I love it!! They engage me to provide expert advice about their business numbers.  There is nothing better than the bank reconciliation matching to the cent! And reviewing a profit and loss actual to budget report satisfies the detective in me as I find out why one expense is higher or lower than budgeted.

I also use experts in my business.  They convert the jargon in their area of expertise into language or examples that help me understand so I can make informed decisions.  IT experts, marketing specialist, admin wizards, systems legends, tax experts and more provide me the support that allows me to get on with growing my business and do the work I love and am confident in.

Here are the five essential experts that I use in my business.

5 Essential Experts

(1) IT experts and peer users

Xero accounting software is the main software I use in my business.  Although I know a lot about the software there are things that I don’t know.  Having a team member that has more experience with the software means I can get support when there is an issue I cannot resolve.

There are many other programs that I use, some daily basis and some on a yearly basis.  I cannot know the ins and outs of all the software that I use and as a small business being the software champion for every program is not practical.  My time is better spent on directly serving my clients, that’s my zone of genius.

A lot of help comes from the peer users, who are invaluable in resolving issues, so they are my first step.  If it still not resolved the program developers themselves step in.

And then there is the hardware.  Having an IT hardware support network means that if something goes wrong (eg the password to the laptop not working) you know they can help, and quickly if needed.  They can also provide advice about the best hardware for your business.

(2) Marketing specialist

My clients and friends know that I love numbers and working with them.  Words – well let’s just say I’m not verbose.  So, when it comes to marketing I struggle to convert my love of numbers into words.  Which is why I have specialists in that field guiding me.

I’m currently updating my website copy and design and found that it was consuming my time that would be better spent elsewhere so I have delegated that process. Now my overwhelm has disappeared and I feel fully supported.

(3) Admin wizards

I can delegate the jobs that don’t need my expertise to complete them to my admin team and save me lots of time. By setting up templates for our standard letters my team can complete jobs easily and to a consistent standard. Because my team are using our software every day, they know more about it than I do! So, it makes sense for them to prepare the paperwork for clients to sign or update change of addresses.

By utilising my admin wizards, I can then leverage my business.

(4) Systems legends

I love systems.  A good system saves time and ensures all actions get completed to a consistent standard.

Moving from a firm with 30+ employees to a firm with just me I didn’t document processes that I had completed or supervised the completion of for many years.  I could do them without thinking.  That changed when I bought on team members. In order to delegate effectively, I needed to have written processes to share with them.

My systems expert helped to document and streamline the workflows so that they were efficient without compromising the process.  These systems and processes now save me time and help my team to ensure every job is completed to a high standard.

(5) Tax experts

Yes, even I use tax experts.  The tax laws are not always black and white and there is a lot of them.  When there is a sticky question that could take me hours to research and read all the legislations, rulings and precedents from court cases having access to tax experts means that I can quickly get the issues resolved.

They are also invaluable in helping to keep my tax knowledge up to date by providing training on the ever-changing tax legislation.

In your business use experts to increase your confidence in your business decisions. You don’t need to do it alone; in fact, you’ll reach that point in your business that doing it alone is holding you back.
