My last 3 Christmas’s while overseas
I have been doing a lot of travelling over the last 3.5 years due to my husbands work. We were posted to Oahu (Hawaii) in January 2021 and then to Newport (Rhode Island) in July 2022 and now we are back in Australia in Canberra.
Although we were both working we managed to fit quite a few tropical island activities, holidays and lots of weekends away during our time in the USA. With our first Australian Christmas looming and the first one with a lot of our family attending since before Covid I have been looking back at our previous 3 Christmas’s.
2023 Christmas with friends in Ridgefield Connecticut
On the way to Ridgefield we stayed at the Griswald Inn in Essex Village Connecticut. It is one of the oldest continually run inn in the USA. It was as a base of operations by the British in 1814 when they sailed up the Connecticut River and sank 28 vessels, commandeered all the town stores of rope (for their ships) and a large quantity of rum! Our traditional Christmas dinner at the Inn included carollers.
Our stay at Ridgefield included Unicorn beer – a very dark beer with glitter in it – I kid you not!

2022 Christmas in Newport with our children visiting from Perth
This was a much colder Christmas than we were used to with a Christmas eve NFL (gridiron) game in minus 11 degrees weather (without the wind chill factor)– that is Celsius! It was so cold the beer froze and some of us retreated to the car to stay warm.
There was a sprinkling of snow which was exciting and also a deep fried turkey!

2021 Christmas in Kailua Oahu
This was our first deep fried turkey attempt, and it went surprisingly well! No fire engines visits required.
As there was still Covid restrictions in place we had a zoom Christmas dinner with our kids and a drive through Christmas lights in the back of a Ute.
